Peace & Justice

This Web site is dedicated to the cause of peace and to the cause of Tibet.

I am an American Tibetan Buddhist and a citizen of the world.

Since the late 1940s, when the Chinese invaded Tibet, Tibetans have
endured a never ending assault to their freedoms, suffered religious
and political persecution, endured the rape of their people, landscape
and culture. The Chinese government is responsible for the deaths of
more than 1.3 million Tibetans, the devastation of national resources
and treasures and the torture and displacement of countless human
beings. In spite of this, the Tibetans remain spiritually strong, firm
in their beliefs, unbroken as a people, and to a large extent
empowered by their great faith and love for their spiritual
leader, the XIV Dalai Lama.

Long live Tibet!
Long live the Dalai Lama!
Long live the power of love!

Peace, love and compassion are
key tenets of Tibetan Buddhism
and many of the world's religions. May these ideals prevail
and motivate the actions of all.

I am a spiritual child of HH the Dalai Lama, Mahatma Gandhi and
Martin Luther King, Jr. and, like them, aspire to live by
the idea that only through love, peace, wisdom and
compassion will we accomplish noble goals and manifest
our true potential as humans on the planet.

(Web site was launched in August 2007)

Tibet is as an actual landscape and a place that resides in the heart and mind of all those who love her. I view Tibet as the world. From what I understand, it was once the seat of
the highest civilization on earth. Tibetan Buddhism contains in it strategies for evolving peace within and around us. It is the only religion that I know of that offers actual strategies for calming the mind. Such strategies could revolutionize the planet. Fortunately, dharma teachings are available in the West since many of Tibet's great teachers were forced into exile. We are also now fortunate to have many groups, institutions and organizations around the world dedicated to preserving Tibet's traditions, art and culture.

In New York, there is the Tibet House, founded by Robert Thurman, Richard Gere and Philip Glass. The center is dedicated to preserving Tibet's art and culture and to extending its systems of philosophy and mind sciences to the public.

The Rubin Museum of Art at 150 W17th Street contains exquisite ancient tapestries and thankhas from Tibet. It is currently featuring an exhibit of modern art devoted to artists' interpretation of the vision and teachings of HH the Dalai Lama.

The Namgyal Institute of Buddhist Studies in Ithaca, New York, is a center where students can learn about the religion, art and culture of Tibet.

Many such places of Tibetan learning, art and culture exist now all across America.

We must support Tibet, Darfur, Iraq and Burma because they are our neighbors. The impulse to help should be as natural as breathing. We are all interrelated, all part of one vast human body. HH the Dalai Lama has said that all beings have the same needs, the same hopes, have families and want to grow old happily. All beings inhabit the same planet and breathe the same air. We must help, not by contributing to the suffering, but by offering mindful solutions, love and care and by taking action regarding the issues that cause suffering -- like war.

The Dalai Lama has maintained awesome patience with Chinese leaders while they continue to overrun Tibet. Not once has he resorted to aggression, violence or retaliation. His answer is to love in return and for this he has won recognition and respect from individuals and nations around the world. Because of him, the world is a better place.

That said, I must assert here that I speak for no one but myself. I am not a spokesperson for Tibet or the Dalai Lama or anyone else. I may seize the freedom to speak and to act on behalf of those who cannot help themselves --  because it is my right and imperative as a human being and because I have learned that what I do or fail to do comes back to me. It is that simple. I also know that speaking is action. And so is writing.

Here is my opportunity to celebrate my love for Tibet, a land I have experienced only in my heart's eye, and to support the Tibetans and their cause. I celebrate the freedom of all!

These peace vigils in Bergen County, N.J. focus largely on protesting the Iraqi occupation and call for the swift return home of U.S. troops from Iraq and for nonviolent resolutions to conflicts there and in Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere. We challenge the Obama Administration to maintain a peaceful and compassionate agenda in foreign and domestic relations.

The Leonia Peace Vigil

Meets Sundays, from 4:30 to 5 p.m. at the corner of Broad Avenue and Fort Lee Road in Leonia.

The Teaneck Vigil

Meets Wednesdays, from 4:40 to 6 p.m. at the National Guard Armory on Teaneck Road in Teaneck.

The Fort Lee Peace Vigil

Meets Thursdays, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the corner of Lemoine Avenue and Bruce Reynolds Blvd. in Fort Lee.

Also, see
www.truemajorityaction.org/oreos/contest.php. This is a very simple, but effective video that indicates the differences between the Pentagon budget and what we have set aside for world hunger, alternative energy, healthcare and education in the U.S.

How do you feel about the Obama Administration's peacemaking agenda? What would you do to help bring peace to a nation at war?

Do you currently attend peace vigils? Why? Why not?

What responsibility, if any, does the average citizen have when it comes to creating peace at large? How do you contribute to the cause of peace?

PEACE NOW!
